Mary: Virgin, Queen and Intercessor |
2/16/2012 |
On December 8, 1854 Pope Pius IX declared the doctrine of the Immaculate Conception, citing as rational grounds for this doctrine both tradition and interpreters of sacred scripture. This is one of many doctrines concerning the Mother of God revered in Catholic tradition. To Catholics (and Orthodox) Mary is held to be without the stain of original sin, ever virgin and able to intercede for us before God himself. But…reply the skeptics; these things are not contained in the Bible. They are Papal inventions that were never part of the teaching during the time of the Apostles.
How do Catholics explain their veneration of Mary to Protestants and others who take as their authority scripture alone? On Thursday, February 16th Dale Ahlquist will present the scriptural case for Mary’s Immaculate Conception, her perpetual virginity and her role as intercessor before God in Heaven. His opponent in this debate will be Pastor Mike Napier of Bible Believers Baptist church in Westminster CO.
Please note that due to Saint Valentine’s Day we will meet on Thursday February 16th, not our normal Tuesday. We will keep our normal start time, which is 6:00 PM for appetizers and social hour, dinner served at 7:00 PM and debate to begin at 7:30 PM.
