Is Life Ever Worth Ending?
Our technological advances are
presenting difficult moral dilemmas with which few are equipped to
deal. The present focus on "practical" disciplines like math and science at the expense of the perennial discipline of philosophy have stripped us of the moral
understanding
necessary to address a variety of issues, one of which is the manner in
which we care for our sick and dying.
Technology can keep the body alive, but
sometimes just barely. Religious leaders, including bishops and popes have provided guidance, but beyond the principles
are specific circumstances that demand prudence and careful
application of the relevance moral teaching.
Join us on January 8, 2013 as we
welcome Dr. Stephen Heaney, a professor of Ethics from the
University of Saint Thomas, and Dr. Steven Moore, a practicing
physician. Professor Heaney and Dr. Moore will debate the moral
obligations
regarding artificial hydration and nutrition. These are questions that
have the potential to affect us all and with rising health care costs
and a growing public conversation regarding how to provide care for our
sick and aging these issue are more timely
than ever.
