Before joining Catholic Answers, he served for nearly two decades as Executive Vice President of the Rockford Institute, publisher of Chronicles: A Magazine of American Culture. From 1995-1997 he served as the Editor of The Family in America.
Graduating in 1987 with a degree in English Literature from Rice University, he was commissioned a Second Lieutenant in the Marine Corps. Following combat officer training at Quantico, Virginia, and field artillery training at Fort Sill, Oklahoma, he served with the 11th Marine Regiment in exercises, deployments, and expeditions in Okinawa, Korea, Japan, the Philippines, and the Persian Gulf, filling the billets of Forward Observer, Fire Direction Officer, and Guns Platoon Commander. He was promoted to Captain in March 1992 and honorably discharged in 1993. His television and radio appearances include Wisconsin Public Television, Illinois Public Television, National Public Radio, the BBC, and Radio Free Europe. For three years he served as an award-winning fortnightly commentator for Northern Illinois Public Radio.
He has addressed audiences at the University of London, the Pontifical Augustinian University in Rome, The Serbian Writers Union in Belgrade, the National Press Club, Catholic Answers, Catholics United for the Faith, the American Chesterton Society, Catholic Citizens of Illinois, Legatus, Ave Maria University, the College of Saint Thomas More, the University of Saint Thomas, Saint Paul, Minnesota, the Institute for Catholic Culture, and many parishes, schools, and religious houses across the republic, including the Priestly Fraternity of Saint Peter, Clear Creek Abbey, the Priory of Ephesus, Benedictines of Mary, Queen of Apostles, Saint Michael's Abbey, and Saint Gregory's Academy.
He is the creator and voice of The Lepanto Lectures, a series of audio recordings on glorious and tragic events in Church history about which Fr. Peter Stravinskas declared: 'Christopher Check has performed a valuable service in providing historically reliable information on certain neuralgic topics, often used to discredit the Church. Each lecture is presented in an engaging style and full of facts geared to make an intelligent response to various 'black legends.' I recommend these talks most enthusiastically.'
Chris and his wife of 24 years, Jacqueline, have four sons, Nicholas, Alexander, John Paul, and Nathanael. The Checks breed and show Cavalier King Charles Spaniels, famed companions of the Stuart Kings, under the kennel 'Top Meadow Cavaliers,' named after G.K. Chesterton's Beaconsfield Estate.
