Should the Eastern Orthodox Return to Full Communion with Rome? 3/10/2015
Catholics and Orthodox accept the validity of each other's sacraments, including ordinations. They are important allies in many theological disputes and cultural battles raging in our society. Catholics could gain much from having the Orthodox Churches' witness to the beauty of the Liturgy, the life of prayer, and many other aspects of Orthodox life. Similarly, the Orthodox would have many gains from the support of the papacy and the strong organizational structures of the Roman Catholic Church. What is there to keep the Orthodox from accepting the pope's rightful place? What is there to keep the pope from accepting the rightful place of the Orthodox patriarchs and bishops? Should we be in full communion again?

In the negative: Orthodox writer and philosopher Mike Lotti contends that the time is not right for full communion since the Roman Catholic Church needs to embrace an ecclesiastical structure that is akin to that which was normative from (roughly) 325-1000 A.D. This may entail either a rejection or a dramatic reinterpretation of the Councils accepted by the Roman Catholic Church, especially Vatican I and its declaration of the Pope’s universal jurisdiction.

In the affirmative: Metropolitan Tribunal Judge Deacon Nathan Allen contends that the concerns of the Orthodox can be accounted for in current canon law and theology. There are workable solutions to the ecclesiastical issues and a way of accounting for the past thousand years, including Vatican I. He will argue that the Orthodox should indeed make the move.
